Clean beauty is defined by beauty products that are especially made to be safe for people and for the planet. A clean product means that it takes into account human and environmental health, uses a nontoxic element as a baseline, and/or plant-based ingredients for better results. Just like eating clean rejects processed foods that in return can make the body sick and feel weighed down, clean beauty also strives to never include unnecessary and unhealthy products in anything they make. By eliminating toxic chemicals, rejecting any kind of animal testing, and using eco-friendly components, clean beauty is the best choice for clean skin and a clean environment.
The idea of going clean and switching over to clean products is super exciting, but overwhelming. You might be thinking, I want to buy new clean products, but does that mean I have to throw out all of my favorite beauty products? Are they super expensive? How can I just throw it all out?
I know when I first understood what clean beauty was, my first instinct was to start from scratch, too, but hello! I have almost a relationship with my already established makeup routine. I also want to make sure I’m buying products that feel good and aren’t breaking the bank. If this sounds like you, don’t worry! Keep reading to see how I’ve outlined this transition for us in six baby steps. Let’s start with the basics.
SPF is critical in ANY skin care routine. As much as we’d like to believe SPF is for the beach, or for tanning poolside, its not. It should be a part of everyone’s everyday routine because UVA rays, which are the culprits behind those signs of aging, like wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and all those little things you don’t love about your skin. And who doesn’t want to prevent skin cancer? If you didn’t know this before, you know it now. So why not make the switch to a true clean SPF product?
Primer – Supergoop!
With so many products dedicated to including skin protection, and in a safe way, you just can’t go wrong with Supergoop!. Primers, lotions, moisturizers, powders, eyeshadow, and lip care, are just some of the products Supergoop! has made. There’s so much goodness, so where should we start?
Let’s start with their makeup primer, because most people already have one in their makeup bag right now. The difference between your primer and Supergoop!’s is that their Unseen Sunscreen primer includes SPF 40! Sunscreen can often feel oily and gunky and that’s why I avoided everyday use. But finally, we have a brand that makes clean sunscreen products that feel like they aren’t even there. You can easily switch over from your drugstore primer to Supergoop!’s for $16. Under Eye Concealer – Bare Minerals
I don’t know about you, but I need a concealer that is going to last all day and not crease. So I searched for a clean product that was up for the task and I found Barepro by Bare Minerals. Barepro is 16 hour full coverage, crease-proof, and water-proof! Bare Minerals is one of the longest running beauty brands that prides itself on the notion that less is more. This concealer is formulated with bamboo stem extract to smooth the look of pores and fine lines, blackcurrant seed oil, sea lavender to nourish and hydrate skin, and help defend your complexion from the damaging effects of pollution and other environmental stressors. It’s cruelty free, paraben free, talc-free, and vegan, all for only $24! Sign up on their website for perks and their newsletters for 15% off your next purchase.
Foundation Powder – Alima Pure
There are actually quite a few clean beauty brands making foundations out there. What really stood out to me with Alima Pure was that you can count their foundation ingredients on just one hand. They have a total of forty five shades to choose from and only use four hypoallergenic ingredients in their powders. Alima Pure products are never tested on animals and are carbon neutral, meaning they have offset 100% of their carbon emissions. Alima Pure also has products for your cheeks, eyes, and lips. With minimal ingredients for maximum impact, you can count on Alima Pure to last you all day and with it being only $28, you and your wallet can feel good about it too!
Mascara – Hourglass Cosmetics
Hourglass Cosmetics is a brand that began in 2004 that truly cares about the safety of animals. The brand began knowing they always wanted to be cruelty free, and their entire line will be vegan by the end of this year! This highly praised vegan mascara, $29, is made without parabens, gluten, sulfates, and other toxic chemicals. Use a light amount for an effortless lash look, or use a bit more and everyone will be asking you what lashes you’re wearing.
Lipstick – Kosas
Kosas lipstick is a lipstick that’s been floating around on the web lately. The brand has been noted in Kourtney Kardashian’s Poosh, Gwenyth Paltrow’s Goop, Vogue, Allure and more, so I did my research to see just how clean the brand is. Kosas sources ingredients for two reasons: extreme nourishment and supreme luxury, and only choose the ones that deliver both. You won’t find parabens, mineral oil, and toxic chemicals in any of their products, plus they’re all gluten-free, egg-free, cruelty-free, and Leaping Bunny certified! Find your next favorite shade here, all for $28.
Now, I’ve used Tarte products before, but I had no idea that Tarte was a clean beauty brand! Tarte Cosmetics are cruelty-free, gluten-free, and made without harmful ingredients such as parabens, mineral oil, and sulfates. And tarte has practically every product a girl could need, so when in doubt, Tarte it out. Tarte’s Stay Spray, which smells like cucumbers btw, will lock down your makeup for 16 hours! You can grab the travel size for $12, or the larger size for $25. It sets your makeup & helps to make it waterproof, sweatproof, and transfer-proof. Everyone needs a great setting spray, whether you’re going out with the girls or at work for the day, and Tarte’s got you covered.
Now you have 6 clean beauty products that are the foundation to any face: primer, concealer, foundation, mascara, lipstick, and setting spray. If you make the switch to just some basic clean products, it’s only a matter of time before your entire beauty collection is clean too! Make the switch to clean beauty, it’s better for you and everything else.
