The Critics Choice Awards ceremony took place on January 12th with Taye Diggs as this year’s host. This year’s award show came with a couple of surprises, and Entertainment Scoop has the inside scoop!

Taye Diggs opened the show with a little song and dance. After Ricky Gervais’ speech at the Golden Globes, it’s safe to say Diggs took a different approach celebrating the night and Hollywood talent. Eddie Murphy was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. Keegan Michael-Kay, who co-stars with Murphy in Dolemite Is My Name, made a heartfelt introduction. Thereafter, Murphy accepted the award with his usual humor and style.

“I’ve been making movies, next year, for 40 years,” Murphy said while accepting the award. “I’ve been doing it for a minute now, and being able to make a living as an actor is a privilege and a blessing, and to make your living making people laugh–you’re the luckiest person on Earth to be able to do that.”

Kristen Bell’s speech was a memorable moment at the Critics Choice awards as she was presented the #SEEHER award. The #SEEHER award is awarded to a “woman who embodies the values set forth by the SeeHer movement, to push boundaries on changing stereotypes and acknowledge the importance of authentic portrayals of women across the entertainment landscape.” The actress got candid as she learned to embrace her brave and cowardly parts’.

“For me, the idea of womanhood is someone who sheds the perfect little box and owns their complexity. I’ve been really lucky to be able to play some really complex women” (Veronica Mars, Princess Anna, The Good Place). What I’ve Learned from all that is that nobody is just one thing, we are all all of the things.”

To top off the night, there were a couple of ties for the night, such as for Best Director. This year’s Critic’s Choice award for Best Director went to both Bong Joon Ho, Parasite, and Sam Mendes, 1917,. This came as a surprise for Joon Ho as he did not expect to win and had not written a speech beforehand.
