Some first Time GRAMMY nominees are making history this year. Lizzo, Billie Eilish, and Lil Nas X are all making their first GRAMMY appearances on Sunday. While being nominated for a GRAMMY is an honor in itself, these artists have accomplished more than just one nomination. Lizzo, Billie Eilish, and Lil Nas X are the three artists with the most GRAMMY nominations this year.
Lizzo has earned 8 nominations for the 2020 GRAMMYs, the most nominations of all artists this year. She was nominated for all four of the GRAMMYs top four categories: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best New Artist. Her song “Truth Hurts” is in the running for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, while her album Cuz I Love You is up for Album of the Year. The four other categories that Lizzo has a nomination in are Best Pop Solo Performance, Best R&B Performance, Best Traditional R&B Performance, and Best Urban Contemporary Album. Lizzo has made a name for herself in the past year and will show off her talent as one of the night’s performers.
Billie Eilish has 6 nominations, four of which are in the GRAMMYs top four categories. Eilish is the youngest artist to earn a nomination in the top four categories. She recently turned 18 years old, but was 17 at the time of her album release. It was her album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? that landed her a nomination in the Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album categories. She is also in the running for Record of the Year and Song of the Year with her hit “Bad Guy.” Furthermore, she’s a contender for Best New Artist category for her highly successful album. Eilish has a large fanbase, and has blown up in such a short amount of time. Her music, style, and personality are different from most artists, which explains her devoted fan base. While winning a GRAMMY or two is a huge achievement, Billie Eilish is making history just by being her unique, gifted self.
Alongside Eilish with six nominations is the American rapper, singer and songwriter, Lil Nas X. Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus is the only song to spend over 17 weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. During the song’s reign on the top of the chart, Lil Nas X came out as gay. He is the only artist to have come out while having a number-one record, but the support for him and his music did not change. “Old Town Road” has earned Lil Nas X nominations in the Record of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Music Video categories. Other categories Lil Nas X is a competitor for are Best Rap/Sung Performance with his song “Panini,” Album of the Year for the album 7, and Best New Artist.
While they are all first time nominees, we can probably expect each of these artists to walk away with their first GRAMMYs on Sunday. Lizzo, Billie Eilish, and Lil Nas X have all already made their mark on the music industry, and now they are making history at the 2020 GRAMMYs.
