It might have been Christopher Nolan’s film, but it was certainly Harry Styles night. The former One Direction member lit up the red carpet last night in NYC for the American premiere of Christopher Nolan’s latest film Dunkirk. This is the first time that the boy bander has officially dipped his toes into the acting pool. Looking more like a movie star dressed in an interesting black suit with bottom pant leg details, and less like a popstar, he greeted his throngs of adoring fans.
Now last night wasn’t Harry’s first red carpet, nor his first time on the big screen, as One Direction had several concert films, however Dunkirk is the first time that Harry is putting his acting chops to the test. Dunkirk is Christopher Nolan’s latest visual spectacle focusing on the real life World War II Battle of Dunker in which British, French and Belgian forces were trapped on French beaches by German soldiers. The film also stars Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, James D’Arcy, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance and Tom Hardy.
Harry Styles it seems was destined to be a part of this epic film. Styles has previously admitted to not knowing what role he was auditioning for listed only as an unnamed project that would become the film, Dunkirk. Likewise director Nolan has said that he had no idea the length to which Harry Styles fame reached when casting the young actor, whom he assumed was relatively unknown. Despite the naysayers, Nolan has argued that he cast Styles based purely on his talent.
When asked about his acting debut by a group of journalists at the NYC premiere, the boy bander joked, “What are we talking about?” When pressed even harder about his fans, the always humorous Styles said, “They are the best people in the world. I’m going up this step now.” Having walked up the steps, heading towards the door and facing his passionate fans, he turned one last time to say “I did very much so,” as if to say I appreciate the opportunity to “act” before rushing into the movie theater.
Harry Styles has said that Dunkirk might be his first movie role, but it also could be his last. Given his performance on the red carpet, it’s probably safe to say that won’t be true.
