Klangstof – the Norwegian-based alternative band that Pigeons and Planes called “further proof that rock is alive and well” – has been tapped as support for upcoming tours by The Flaming Lips and Miike Snow. The band will be joining The Flaming Lips for a series of West Coast dates, including a May 9 show at The Theatre at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles. The run with Miike Snow kicks off June 11 at Stubbs in Austin, TX.
The band will also be performing at numerous festivals, including Coachella, Sasquatch!, Bonnaroo, and Firefly. See below for itinerary. Klangstof just wrapped up a tour of Britain, earning praise from MTV UK, which said, “keep your eyes open for Klangstof…who captivated London last night.”
Interview Magazine premiered the Autograf remix of Klangstof’s “We Are Your Receiver. “From a soft, vocal-driven introduction, Autograf proceed to take things up a notch, lacing synth after synth to create a perfect harmony of futuristic yet ethereal appeal. The cool, crisp production proves yet again that when it comes to remixes, the Chicago-based trio is at the top of its class. Listen HERE.
“We Are Your Receiver” – a track from Klangstof’s debut album, Close Eyes to Exit (Mind of a Genius/Warner Bros. Records) – was hailed as a “woozy indie pop gem” by Consequence of Sound, which praised the band for creating “soundscapes that sound as lush as rainforests but somehow retain some of the cold austerity for which Scandinavia is famous.” DIY Magazine observed, “‘We Are Your Receiver’ may be about wearing a disguise in the online realm, but Klangstof haven’t hidden anything on this gorgeously atmospheric track.”View the official video for “We Are Your Receiver” HERE, which premiered on NOWNESS.
Klangstof was recently named Best Alternative Act at the Edison Awards in Holland (the Dutch equivalent of the GRAMMY Awards®). Koen Van De Wardt, who founded the bandand writes all of its songs, turned to music as a way of dealing with the loneliness he felt when his family moved from his native Netherlands to rural Norway when he was 14. “I was just a guy playing football and hanging with friends in Holland and then all of a sudden I was sitting in Norway with no one around,” he recalls. “My life was torn apart and I had to start all over again.”
Klangstof – Hostage [Official Music Video]
Holing up in his parents’ basement, he mastered one instrument after the next. After playing bass for the popular Norwegian band Moss, Van De Wardt began creating his own music as Klangstof – a combination of the words “klang,” which means echo in Norwegian, and “stof” is Dutch for dust.
Los Angeles-based record label Mind of a Genius signed Klangstof on the strength of the demo for “Hostage.” Combining minimalist beats with retro synthesizers, acoustic drums and guitars, Van De Wardt crafted heavenly walls of sound on the track, which found favor with the likes of Annie Mac, Zane Lowe, NME, The FADER and more.
While Klangstof is a highly personal pursuit, Van De Wardt believes his band mates are crucial to properly articulating his music. “It’s so important to have a band around me that I fully trust. They’re an extension of my body, an extension of my mind.” The group made its first trip to the States last fall, opening for Jagwar Ma.
