Maria Menounos, 39 told People magazine that it took surgeons approximately 7 hours to remove the tumor in her brain.
The tumor was detected as meningioma. Menounos said that her speech on the teleprompter became blurry and she slurred her words.
Meningiomas are not referred to as “brain tumors” in the medical field. According to Mayo Clinic meningioma means the layer of tissue connected to the spinal cord and brain tissue.
Meningioma’s can squeeze or compress brain tissue, nerves and vessels found in the brain as brain tumors.
Menounos’s joined E! in 2014. From there she co-hosted her own new program on E! the following year.
At the time of her illness, Menounos’s also shared on social media, an image of a close family member. Captioned “First I wanna say thank you all for the well wishes, prayers and support. It’s been a crazy time here in our home. I want you all to know that I’m ok!! Seriously I’m recovering well…”
The caption made Maria want to re-evaluate her life and assure others that “we put ourselves last.” Maria told people “ I tell people all the time if your car is making a weird noise, you take it to the mechanic. How come when our body is making weird noises, we ignore it? I’m so lucky that I went to the doctor and raised the alarm.”
Menounos’s surgeon was able to remove almost 100% of the meningioma brain tour found in Menounos
E! Entertainment said in a statement, “our thoughts and support go out to Maria and her family and we wish them all the best knowing that Maria will tackle this with the same fierce dedications she is known for;”
In a statement for E! Entertainment news, Maria also said “I am so grateful for the past three years at E! had such an amazing time co-hosting with Jason Kennedy and working everyday with the wonderful roster of talent on the show…” Maria continues, “I want to encourage people to find some stillness in their life so they can listen to their bodies- and hear what’s going on.”
