In January 1995, the iconic rapper Tupac Shakur broke off his relationship with “material girl” Madonna because she was white.
While in prison, Shakur wrote a note to Madonna explaining his reasoning to the break-off. He never intended the breakoff to be hurtful to Madonna; it was the pressure to maintain his “image.”
“For you to be seen with a black man wouldn’t in any way jeopardize your career, if anything it would make you seem that much more open and exciting”, said Shakur in his letter to Madonna.
He continues on; by explain the pressure on his image.
“But for at least in my previous perception I felt due to my ‘image’ I would be letting down half of the people who made me what I thought I was.”
Actress Rosie Perez introduced superstar Madonna and rapper Tupac before they began dating.
In 2015 Madonna admitted in an interview on “The Howard Stern Show” that she indeed was dating the rapper before his death in 1996.
The rapper ends the letter in a optimistic note. Asking Madonna for a visit so he can further explain his emotions and position on the relationship.
“I offer my friendship once again this time much stronger and focused. If you’re still interested I would like to further discuss this with you but some it couldn’t wait…I felt compelled to tell you…just in case anything happened to me.”
He continues by ending the letter “I don’t know how you feel about visiting me but If you could find it in your heart I would love to speak face to face with you. It’s funny but this experience has taught me not to take time for granted.”
