Wonder Woman dominated the box office over the weekend bringing in over 100 Million– the most ever for a female director. It was even rated a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is one of the highest ever for a superhero film.
This is the first female superhero film directed by a woman— a first for the comic genre. From the slow-motion ass kicking scenes to the hidden shady comments, this movie has it all and more.
The Amazon Warrior Princess is played by the Israeli actress Gal Gadot. You may recognize Gaddot from her appearance back in 2009 in the Fast and the Furious franchise.
Wonder Woman is part of the Justice League, she fights along side Superman and Batman. She doesn’t arise from a male superhero such as Supergirl, Batgirl, or Black Canary. Her secret weapon is not the sexy suit, nor her badass moves, or her able to fire shockwaves from her wrists/forearms. It is the characters portrayal, and the positive image of being an independent female hero. It is a historical opportunity for women in this generation to empower.
The film even has female villans- Dr. Poison played by Elena Anaya. Although the character didn’t get enough screen time it was nice to see a more woman representation in a comic origin film.
The movie starts off by connecting the ending of Batman v. Superman, where Bruce Wayne sends Diana a vintage photograph. Viewers are introduced to Wonder Woman’s backstory at the beginning of her childhood. Diana is passionate about training at such a young age along with other Amazonian warriors. She then adventures into the 20th century in London as she has the perfect balance of resolve and childlike innocence as she is hoping to stop, Ares: The God of War. She is accompanied by four other male characters, who play a big part in saving the world. Straight from the comics, Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine in the role of sidekick, also love interest. Or someone that needs to be rescued a role that’s usually known comic women like Lois Lane, Jane Foster, and Iris West.
Throughout the movie we watch Diana learn how to navigate through society, because her homeland seems to lay in a 3D dimension. She insists on carrying her shield and sword everywhere. Wonder Woman contains plenty of references to the greater DC universe, but it also includes some fan favorite moments out of the comics, including Diana’s first time trying ice cream.
During their walk through the market in the film, Diana encounters the dessert and says “It’s wonderful. You should be very proud”. You might have recognized that if you watched Justice League War. Diana meets a young girl who introduces her to ice cream. She screams “Ice cream is wonderful!” and points her sword towards the ice cream vendor, followed by “You should be very proud of this achievement.” Ironically, that moment comes straight from the comics. In Justice League #3 the same scene occurs, although Diana doesn’t exactly threaten the ice cream vendor this time.
