15 Oct Billboard Music Awards 2020 Recap
Stars from every genre of music came together for the Billboard Music Awards last night. There were so many surprises and plenty of memorable moments.
One of the biggest questions circulating all over social media is, Where is Harry Styles? Addison Rae announced Harry Styles as this year’s Chart Achievement Award Recipient, but when it was time for Harry to receive his award, he was nowhere to be found. Fans were distraught as they wanted to see him receive his award.
Another major topic of discussion following the night was politics. Stars were not afraid to hold back on sharing their political views and advocating for things that matter to them. Demi Lovato sang a song dedicated to Donald Trump, and Lizzo wore a dress that said “vote” all over it. As the presidential elections come closer, more and more celebrities speak out and prompt their fans to vote and take action.
In her acceptance speech for her award for Top Song Sales Artist, Lizzo spoke powerfully about voter suppression, “Let me tell you all something. When people try to suppress something, it’s normally because that thing holds power,” she continued. “They’re afraid of your power. There’s power in who you are. There’s power in your voice. So whether it’s through music, protests, or your right to vote, use your power, use your voice, and refuse to be suppressed.”
The Grammy Award Winner’s acceptance speech left everyone in chills by just how powerful it was, but something else that left everyone in chills was John Legend’s tear-jerking performance of the song, ‘Never Break.’ He held back tears as he dedicated the song to his wife Chrissy since news broke that they had a miscarriage. It was a moment with such raw emotion and his beautiful voice.
Some of the big winners of the night include Post Malone, Billie Eilish, and Lil Nas X. Post Malone took home the title for Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Streaming Artist, Top Male Rap Artist, and MORE! He swept the competition away and even was one of the headline performers for the night. All we have left to say to Post Malone is, CONGRATULATIONS!
Billie Eilish also had her moment winning Top New Artist, among others. She used her moment to give an acceptance speech to urge watchers to vote, wear a mask, and thank them for supporting her.
Hearing the Jonas Brothers get awards made everybody’s inner child just so happy. Seeing the Jonas Brothers thriving is what everyone needs right now, and it is a moment to celebrate. They won Top Group or Duo over one of the most prominent groups right now, BTS, but BTS went on to win Top Social Artists. Fans voted the category that BTS won, and of course, the BTS army came out and voted for their favorites.
Some of the other big names included Khalid, who took home all of the significant R & B categories, and Luke Combs, who took home all of the significant Country Music categories. J Balvin, Bad Bunny, and Daddy Yankee were the big winners for Latin Music, and Kanye West took home various awards for Gospel Music, and his album Jesus is King.
And who can forget ‘Old Town Road’? Lil Nas X took home various awards for his song in collaboration with Billy Ray Cyrus. The song came out in 2018, but the remixed version was released in 2019, safe to say they are still “taking their horse to the Old Town Road” with their hit!
