Before Ariana Grande’s “The Voice” season even starts, Blake Shelton is starting the competitive talk. After the announcement of her position as a the fourth coach for season 21, Blake Shelton weighs in on her joining their competition.
The 27-year-old pop sensation was recently announced as the fourth coach for the next season of “The Voice.” She will be replacing Nick Jonas, who is currently pushing his team through the Battle Rounds of season 20. Since tours are not likely to be starting anytime soon, Grande is getting herself involved in other projects!
The country star was a surprise co-host on “Today With Hoda & Jenna,” where he spilled the tea on the upcoming season. Shelton states that he is a fan of hers, but the competition is on.
“About two days ago, the producers texted us and said it was going to be Ariana,” he said. “I’m excited about it. I’m a fan of hers. I’m not going to lie, we’re still going to beat the crap out of her, you know, on the show. It’s our job — they pay us to win, Hoda. They don’t pay me to lose.”
“I used to look like Ariana when I started the show, and now look at me!” Shelton jokes.
According to ET, he Battle and Knockout Rounds are Shelton’s “least favorite” part of the competition because he doesn’t like to eliminate team members.
“You have these people, you beg them to be on your team and then, the very next thing you do is kick half of them off,” he said. “That’s what makes it so great to watch as a fan of the show. I mean, that’s what keeps you on the edge of your seat. But as a coach, I hate that part.”
The country star’s favorite part happens to be the Blind Auditions. He thinks that’s when the competition between coaches really kicks off and they get to “go for the throat.”
“My favorite is still the Blind Auditions,” Shelton adds. “It’s so much fun that we get to hear all the singers and that’s when we really get to go for the throat, as far as the coaches competing against each other. That’s where I can’t wait to get a hold of Ariana.”
Grande announced her new position when she shared a photo of herself sitting in one of the iconic spinning Voice chairs and added a shoutout to Jonas.
NBC executive Jenny Groom stated that Grande’s insane talent will make her an “invaluable coach” due to her musical expertise!
“Her unmatched vocal skills, creativity, and unique expertise on all facets of the industry will make her an invaluable coach to the next generation of artists,” the NBC exec said.
