It’s time to say goodbye to viral Chrissy Teigen tweets and her jaw-dropping clap-backs. On Wednesday night, Teigan left Twitter for good, after talking about cyberbullying and abuse that comes from the platform.
The Announcement
“This no longer serves me as positively as it serves me negatively…I’ve always been portrayed as the strong clap back girl but I’m just not,” she confessed in a tweet.
Teigen acknowledged that her Twitter fanbase “has been [her] world” for over a decade. Her witty and candid tweets led her to having 13.7 million followers on the app.
Due to her large audience, the 35-year-old TV personality often found herself under attack from trolls and haters.
Teigen admitted that the hateful responses had started to affect her.
“My desire to be liked and fear of pissing people off has made me somebody you didn’t sign up for, and a different human than I started out here as!”
The Conspiracies
Things took a particularly dark turn in 2017, when conspiracy group QAnon began to target Teigen and her husband, singer John Legend, for their alleged participation in a “secret pedophile ring.”
In an effort to protect herself and her family from the abuse, the model took to blocking and unfollowing accounts which either promoted this conspiracy or made attacks.
Despite the blocking, harassment was still thrown her way.
Last year, she fell victim to online harassment when trolls mocked her recent miscarriage, claiming it was a ploy to secure sympathy and popularity.
Teigen joins celebrities like Lizzo, Miley Cyrus and Meghan Markle in taking a break from social media.
The Farewell
Before deactivating her account, Teigen urged her fans to remember the power of their words.
“I encourage you to know and never forget that your words matter. No matter what you see, what that person portrays, or your intention,” she concluded.
