10 Feb Christina Milian to Take Naya Rivera’s Role in Starz’s ‘Step Up’
Christina Milian is set to star in Starz’s “Step Up: High Water,” based on the 2006 film series. The actress, 39, will replace late actress Naya Rivera’s role as Collette in the series, several months after her accidental death.
About ‘Step Up: High Water’
“Step Up: High Water” first aired in 2018 on YouTube. In May, Starz picked up the series for a third season two months before Rivera’s death.
The show’s premise focuses on an Atlanta-based performing arts school led by its founder Sage Odom, portrayed by singer Ne-Yo, and his partner Collette as they explore the highs and lows of fame and power.
Naya Rivera’s Death
After starring in the first two seasons of the spin-off, the “Glee” alum drowned in a tragic accident while boating with her 4-year-old son Josey in Santa Clarita, Ca.
Her body was recovered on Jul. 13 after Rivera was declared a missing person five days prior.
A Statement from the ‘Step Up’ Creator
According to a statement on Monday, creator and executive producer Holly Sorensen discussed Rivera’s tragic death and Milian’s new role.
“Naya’s death was a terrible loss to our world that we will, frankly, never stop mourning,” Sorensen said in her statement. “It was almost impossible to consider there could be someone so graceful and loving who could both help us honor our loss, while also bringing a deep reservoir of talent to our show, in so many areas.”
Sorensen further discussed Christina Milian’s role, concluding, “[She] is an exceptional human and dazzling performer and we are so happy she has joined our family.”
A Statement from Ne-Yo
“There is no replacing Naya. Let’s get that straight,” said Ne-Yo about his former castmate. “Her spirit lives on in our memories and every part of what this show is and will be.”
Ne-Yo continued his statement addressing the future of the revamped series, stating, “Christina has big shoes to fill and she knows it, which speaks to her poise and respect as a person and an artist. I’m more than certain of her ability to bring an energy and light to this character that Naya’s fans as well as the rest of the world will love. We’ve welcomed Christina with absolute open arms and have rallied around her with love and support.”

The “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” actress addressed her role as Collette in the series.
