17 Feb Claudia Conway Makes a Shocking Appearance on American Idol
The 19th season of American Idol started out with a highly anticipated and promoted audition from Claudia Conway. In her shocking audition, the teen described how music has been an escape from all the political drama surrounding her family.
The 16-year-old TikTok sensation not only is a popular online influencer, but has “high profile political figures” as parents, according to Conway. Her mother, Kellyanne Conway was President Trump’s senior advisor and her father, George Conway, is a lawyer.
Conway gained popularity online for posting videos of her strained relationship with her parents, including videos of her and her mom arguing.
Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie are the judges for this season. When Conway walked into the room, Perry asked her “Are you okay?,” in reference to the family drama Conway posted online.
“When your mom’s working for the president of the United States, who you very much disagree with, it’s really hard,” Conway explained to the judges.
The show offers contestants to talk to family members virtually. Kellyanne gave her daughter a pep talk and told her this moment was a “very humbling experience.” Her father was shown giving her a first-bump and waiting outside the audition room for her.
Many people felt uncomfortable that ABC aired Conway’s parents message, as the relationship between Conway and her parents seems more strained than ever.
“But when life is all going downhill, I have my music. Now, I kind of want to get out of the controversy, get out of the drama, get out of the political whatever, and let people know that I am a singer and that this is what I want to do,” she said.
“It’s a lot, but, you now, I only want to spread love, and I love a compromise. And I do agree to disagree with my mom and my dad.”
Conway performed two songs for the judges, Rihanna’s “Love on the Brain,” and Adele’s “When We Were Young.” While singing “Love on the Brain,” Perry stopped her to take off her shoes since she seemed uncomfortable in them. After taking off her shoes, Conway gave her rendition of “When We Were Young.”
“It’s like you lost your youth because you weren’t able to experience it on your own without all of this noise. Your dad’s your dad, your mom’s your mom. Who is Claudia? You have to calm the storm that is around you,” Perry said to Conway before she sang for the second time.
After her audition, Bryan commented that her range is limited but she portrayed her emotions “really, really well.” Perry told her to stop reading comments online and Richie was more impressed by her second song.
When it came down to the votes, Bryan voted no, but Perry and Richie voted yes, giving Conway a ‘Golden Ticket’ and sending her straight to the Hollywood finalist round.
“I think what you’re doing right now is stepping forward and announcing who you are. You chose music. I want to give you a shot at music,” said Richie.
“Claudia, you’re not going to D.C., honey. You’re going straight to Hollywood!,” Perry exclaimed.
The Hollywood Finalist Round will air in a few weeks and Conway will compete against other finalists for a spot on the competition.
