Dove Cameron’s “Cheating” Debacle

In a recent Q&A on Instagram, Ryan McCartan, the ex-fiance of actress Dove Cameron, accused her of cheating while they were engaged. McCartan dropped the bomb when a fan asked, “What’s your proudest moment?” The former Liv & Maddie actor responded, “Within two weeks, my fiancée cheated on and left me, I almost died from food poisoning, and Donald Trump was elected president. I truly didn’t think I would be able to make it through that part of my life. I’m proudest of the light that came from that darkness, and my ability to survive and turn the anger and sadness I had into positive life changes and a new way forward.” At the time of the split, McCartan tweeted on October 5, 2016, “Dove has decided this relationship isn’t what she wants, we still love each other very much. Please be sensitive as this is painful.”
Dove Cameron played both title characters of the Disney show, Liv & Maddie, and starred in all three Descendants movies for the network. McCartan was her costar and first love interest on screen and off in Liv & Maddie. They dated for three years before he popped the question in 2016. Then six months later they broke off their engagement. Discussing their relationship in 2019, Cameron told Seventeen magazine, “A lot of what I went through in that first relationship, the very low-lows, I did not make public. I was under the impression that I had to make everything look perfect all the time and my partner definitely put that in my ear.”
Shortly after McCartan dropped his Instagram bombshell on Cameron out of the blue, she reacted on Twitter with a retweeted quote that read, “When a toxic person can no longer control you, they will try to control how others see you. The misinformation will feel unfair, but stay above it, trusting that other people will eventually see the truth just like you did.” Cameron added simply, “Beautiful,” to the quote. McCartan responded on Instagram, claiming he wants to clear the air once and for all because of the pile up online. “I think Dove and I fundamentally agree about our relationship… we were young, and immature. Our relationship was dysfunctional. We were a bad match.” He goes on, “She made claims about me and about our past that I don’t think are fair or even true, but she is entitled to her opinion.”
As for McCartan’s cheating claim against Cameron, no proof or names have been produced. If McCartan is done discussing the issue like he claims, then only the schedule for filming of Descendants 2 offers any sort of support to McCartan’s accusation. Cameron told Seventeen magazine that “the earth moved for both of us” when she met her current boyfriend Thomas Doherty, who plays Harry Hook in Descendants 2 and 3. Shooting for the sequel started on September 8th in Victoria and Vancouver, Canada. Two weeks after meeting, Doherty and Cameron ran off and got matching tattoos, Cameron even had receipts for the tattoos printed on throw pillows as an anniversary gift. According to Thomas’ Instagram account, he was promoting another Disney Channel show The Lodge in the U.K. for much of September 2016, then he landed in Vancouver, Canada on September 25th and felt “so jetlagged, I’m losing my mind.” This means he met Cameron in late September, and by October 5th, her engagement was off. Cameron even told Seventeen that Thomas told her he loved her within a week of their meeting. So there is one week of shooting in Vancouver that could be foggy on the fidelity index. For now, the real crime of love is breaking off her engagement with McCartan by showing off a fresh tattoo that is matchy matchy with another man… and rubbing it in with the receipts.
