How to Spice Up Your Long-Term Relationship

Is your long-term relationship in need of some excitement?

In the beginning of a new relationship everything seems to be exciting. The thrill of a new romance can create an intoxicating feeling of love. There is a euphoric sensation of feeling out of control and living in a daze. You have butterflies, your heart races at just the thought of the person, and you’re overwhelmed by an adrenaline rush. You create moments together that you both can look back at and laugh, and you’re also learning new things about each other everyday.

Some would say that this is the best stage of a relationship, when all is fresh!

However, the time is will come where you eventually become comfortable with your significant other once the relationship becomes long-term. After being together for a long period of time, things tend to level out a bit. You easily go from making spontaneous plans, to adjusting to daily routines together. The relationship can slowly start to feel more predictable.

At this point, you may find that you and your partner are diligently putting effort into putting the fun and excitement back into your relationship. Some will describe this phase as the “boring” or “comfortable” stage.

Although there’s a difference between feeling like you’re bored vs. comfortable in a relationship, the good news is there are tips that you can use so that you don’t have to feel either! Here are five tips to spice up your long-term relationship.

Take Good Care of Your Mental Health

Believe it or not, your mental and emotional health correlates heavily with your everyday actions in life. You can’t be the best you for your partner if you’re not your best self. Maintain the same activities and work towards the same goals that brought you joy before meeting your partner.

Enlighten your mind and spirit by repeating positive affirmations to yourself confirming the beauty, kindness, and love inside you. Your confidence plays a huge role in how you receive new twist and turns that go along with a relationship. With this confidence, you are also able to propose new ideas that you feel will spark up your relationship without feeling shy or awkward about your suggestions.

Ask Your Partner Questions

Being in a long-term relationship means that you already know everything that you could possibly know about your lover, right? Wrong. Very wrong. People grow and develop new interests and curiosities over time. No one will remain the same exact individual or have the same exact emotions throughout the entire relationship. Be sure to ask your partner about their interest in new foods, activities, or travels that they would be interested in. Just don’t assume you already know. Ask your partner about their wants and dreams. These questions will spark conversations on new venues and adventures to try together, making this a “first” for the both of you.

Find Something To Look Forward To

Plan dates! Do you know of any concerts or plays coming in town? Plan ahead so that there is excitement in you that is building toward that date arriving. There’s nothing better than anticipating a great night out with your partner. If your favorite performer is having a show in your city, there is sure to be a night of memories and fun.

Love Notes

There are times where we can feel unappreciated or maybe taken for granted by our partner. Leaving love notes around the house, or in their car even, is a great way to give a thoughtful surprise. Write on the note what first made you fall in love with the person, or what you enjoy and appreciate the most about them.

Spontaneous Staycations

You don’t have to take an expensive vacation out of the country to feel like you are on a trip. A spontaneous ‘staycation’ is a perfect date for a long-term relationship. There are affordable deals for hotels and resorts in your area on Groupon. Spending a weekend away from the comfortable and predictable environment that you’re used to can really bring a spark back into your love life. Take advantage of a new scenery close to home!
