23 Apr Hulu Announces ‘How I Met Your Mother’ Spinoff Starring Hilary Duff
The show is following the premise of the original. It will follow Sophie (Duff), as she tells her son the story of meeting his father. The show focuses on Sophie and her friends as they figure out who they are, what they want and navigate falling in love.
“This Is Us” co-showrunners and “Love, Victor” co-creators, Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, will be writing and producing the show with “How I Met Your Mother” creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. Duff will also produce the show with Adam Londy.
“I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie. As a huge fan of “How I Met Your Mother,” I’m honored and even a little nervous that Carter and Craig would trust me with the sequel of their baby,” Duff said.
“Isaac and Elizabeth are brilliant, and I can’t wait to work alongside them and all of their genius. Just fangirling over here getting to join the Hulu Originals and 20th families,” she continued. “I realize there are big shoes to fill and I’m excited to slip my 6 1/2’s in there!”
“How I Met Your Mother” aired on CBS between 2005 and 2014. It ran for nine seasons, with over 200 episodes. The original cast included stars like Cobie Smulders, Josh Radnor, Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan, with Bob Saget as the original narrator.
It’s safe to say fans of Duff and the original sitcom were shocked but ecstatic about the news. And the show’s creators are excited as well!
“We are beyond excited to be bringing “How I Met Your Father” to Hulu,” said Apataker and Berger. “Carter and Craig’s iconic original series revolutionized the half-hour comedy, and we are so honored to be carrying the torch forward for the next generation – and with Hilary Duff no less!”
The pair also gave a teaser, sharing that Bob Saget’s voice could be back!
“We can’t wait for audiences to meet Sophie and her crew, and watch them come into their own and find love in modern-day New York City. And we hope nobody thinks it’s weird that Bob Saget will be playing old Hilary Duff’s voice,” they continued.
Hilary is Ready
Hilary Duff is best known for her acting in the Disney Channel original show, “Lizzie McGuire.” Duff and Disney+ were planning to revive the classic show, but it was cancelled due to creative differences.
Duff explained that she only wanted to return to Lizzie’s world, if the show was more mature and less childlike. The original show aired in 2001.
Now, ready to take on her new role, Duff posted a video regarding the spinoff on Instagram.
“I’m really excited to dig and find out who Sophie is going to be,” she said. “And the new onscreen family I’m going to have [is] super exciting.”
She expressed her gratitude for “working with the amazing writers and producers who are spearheading this project.”
“I truly feel blessed and I can’t wait, so I hope you’re excited just like me.”
