Joshua Bassett Opens Up About His Sexuality

Joshua Bassett has opened up about his sexuality on social media. This comes after hinting at “coming out” in a recent interview.

Joshua’s Statement

On Tuesday, the “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” star shared a video on Instagram of him singing, with a lengthy, powerful caption about “love and acceptance.”

“I’m breaking the spell. I’m mending the cycle,” Bassett sings. “Been going through hell, need more than survival. If I don’t work this out, I’ll probably pass it down again. The time for change is now. It’s my life. It’s my life to live.”

In his caption, the singer addressed people who spew “toxicity, hatred, and negativity,” and encouraged accepting others for who they are.

“My entire life people have told me about my sexuality,” Bassett wrote. “People have shamed me for things they know nothing about.”

“It’s 2021. We are the generation of love & growth. It’s time to start acting like it,” he continued. “Whether you love me, hate me, or damn me to hell, I love you all the same. Love who you love shamelessly. It’s okay to still be figuring out who you are. Life’s too short to let ignorance and hatred win. I choose love.”

The Harry Styles Comment

On Monday, news of the 20-year old’s sexuality created controversy on social media after a clip of a recent interview surfaced Immediately, Bassett trended on Twitter.

During the interview, Bassett gushed over pop singer Harry Styles and expressed his admiration for him. 

“I think he’s a nice guy, doesn’t say too much, but when he talks it matters. He’s cool,” Bassett said. 

The Disney actor not only praised Styles for his coolness, but also his looks, causally .

“Also, he’s hot, you know? He’s very charming, too. Also, a lot of things,” he said. “This is also my coming out video, I guess.”

Rumors and Upcoming Projects

Aside from his sexuality making buzz, Bassett’s love life has been highly publicized. The singer, known for dating singer Sabrina Carpenter, is rumored to be the influence of co-star Olivia Rodrigo’s hit single “Drivers License.” 

While neither Bassett or Rodrigo have discussed the two’s relationship publicly, they are both gearing up for upcoming projects this year.

Bassett released his self-titled EP in March, while Rodrigo will release her debut album “Sour” on May 21.
