Sabrina Carpenter Speaks Out About the Meaning of New Song, ‘Skin’

Sabrina Carpenter finally spoke out publicly about the rumors surrounding her new song, “Skin” after it added fuel to the fiery love triangle drama that’s been circulating on social media ever since the release of “Drivers License.”

Under Her ‘Skin’

Carpenter’s newly released song, “Skin” has some undeniably direct lyrics that appear to address specific lines of “Drivers License.” such as, “Maybe you didn’t mean it/Maybe blonde was the only rhyme,” and, “Don’t drive yourself insane/ It won’t always be this way.”

After its release, fans and foes of the single went wild on social media dissecting the meaning behind every word. The internet was fiercely divided over how to feel about the song.

Breaking Her Silence

“Thank you to everyone who has listened to skin especially those who have opened their minds to lyrically what I was trying to get across,” the “Girl Meets World” alum, 21, wrote via Instagram on Sunday, January 24.

Carpenter goes on to clarify that she wasn’t trying to “diss” Olivia Rodrigo or her song “Drivers License” in any way, calling the song “magnificent” and stating she was not bothered by it in any way.

“I was at a tipping point in my life for countless reasons. so I was inspired to do what I usually do to cope, write something that I wish I could have told myself in the past,” the singer wrote. “people can only get to you if you give them the power to. and a lot of people were trying to get to me. the song isn’t calling out one single person. some lines address a specific situation, while other lines address plenty of other experiences I’ve had this past year…”

Isn’t It Ironic?

In her statement, Carpenter also acknowledged the obvious irony of penning an entire song that states she’s unbothered and no one can get under her skin.

“It also shows that many things have actually gotten under my skin.. and I’m still learning to not give other people so much power over my feelings,” She wrote.

Without naming her partners in the publicly perceived love triangle, Carpenter asked fans not to turn the drama into “an endless cycle.” She added, “Please don’t take this as an opportunity to send more hate anyone’s way. Lots of love to u all. Thanks for letting me grow.”

It sounds like the drama between these three might finally be dying down, but only time will tell! What are your thoughts? Drop a comment down below and let us know!
