Six Steps to Help You Beat Insomnia

If you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t fall back asleep, or if you can’t sleep at all, you definitely have insomnia. Sleep is one of the most important parts of taking care of your physical health, and losing it can definitely have disadvantages. 

You will remain tired during the day, lose concentration, and even face potential health risks. However, if you’re tired of losing precious sleep hours, there are ways to beat insomnia.

Limit Your Technology

Cellphones, television, computers, and social media are all addicting mediums that we overuse daily. Technology can definitely keep us awake at night, especially if you’re scrolling through TikTok videos at 3 a.m. or binge-watching “Grey’s Anatomy” on Netflix.

Statistics show that “about one-in-four people” aged 18 to 24 years old reported that “they don’t sleep well because of technology.”

If you want to get a good night’s sleep and wake up rejuvenated, consider limiting your technology use. Set schedules or times to use your phone and try to avoid any engagement around the night time. 

Don’t Eat or Drink Before Bed

According to WebMD, eating food before going to bed can activate your digestive system and keep you awake. Drinking also can fill up your bladder in the middle of the night, waking you up with half-asleep bathroom trips at 2 a.m.

While a midnight snack is fun if you don’t care about sleep, consider eating a hearty dinner that will keep you filled up before bed.

Don’t Take Naps

A nap can be beneficial in some cases, but if you take a nap in the middle of the afternoon, it may keep you from sleeping after dark. It can prevent you from getting proper sleep at night, especially if you take a great nap that’s more than an hour.

Consider a New Bed

Your mental and physical health may not be the cause of your insomnia. It may be the comfort of your own bed. If you’re sleeping on a very uncomfortable bed, or if you have poor support from your pillows, it may be time to buy a new mattress.

Of course, it may be costly, but if you’re willing to get a great night’s sleep, buying a new mattress will be worth your health.

Exercise

This is the safest answer for beating insomnia. Exercising is very important and it can “improve sleep quality.” According to WebMD, if you consider exercising three hours before bed, it may be beneficial to your sleep!

In general, exercising is important. Insomnia is also known for being a cause to health issues, such as obesity.

Reduce Stress

There may be something that’s stressing you out or giving you anxiety. If you have a final exam that’s dwelling on you or a big event you’re not prepared for, you might wake up or stay up all night. 

If you’re worried about something during the day, consider distracting yourself with things that you enjoy. Read a book, draw, or listen to music. Doing these things can allow you to fall asleep properly.
