The 2021 Oscars Nominees are Announced

Award season is underway and the Oscars are next. The 93rd Academy Awards are around the corner and the nominations have been officially announced! The nominees are both diverse and well-deserved, leaving many fans pleased.

New Rules

On Monday morning, the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards were announced. The 2021 Oscars were originally set for February 28 however the academy decided to postpone the ceremony until late April, due to the pandemic. 

Due to the postponing of the show, the eligibility window was extended from January 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021, two months longer than normal! Films that were supposed to be released in theatre but were streamed on platforms are also eligible to compete in this season. 

Best Picture

Last years Oscars made history with Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” winning multiple top awards. “Parasite” was also the first non-English movie to win the award for Best Picture

This year’s Best Picture nominations include; “The Father” by Florian Zeller, “Judas and the Black Messiah” by Shaka King, “Mank” by David Fincher, “Minari” by Lee Issac Chung, “Nomadland” by Chloé Zhao, Promising Young Woman by Emerald Fennell, “Sound of Metal” by Darius Marder, and “The Trial of the Chiacgo 7” by Aaron Sorkin. 

Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland has been a fan favorite at the awards this season after winning Best Motion Picture Drama at the Golden Globes and Best Picture at the Critic’s Choice Awards. 


This years Oscars are making history with its diverse nomination list. Both Zhao and Fennell are nominated multiple times in this season. This is the first year two women have been nominated for Best Director. This year also has 32.3% of its nominees as women. 

Zhao is the first woman to receive four nominations in a year, Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Picture as a producer and Best Adapted Screenplay. Fennell was nominated for three categories, Best Director, Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. 

For Best Actor in a Leading Role, actors Riz Ahmed, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, Steven Yeun and the late Chadwick Boseman are nominated.

Viola Davis, Andra Day, Vanessa Kirby, Frances McDormand and Carey Mulligan are up for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

The nomination list contained some surprises people weren’t expecting. The nomination of Lakeith Stanfield for Best Supporting Actor and “Another Round” being nominated for Best Directing were both a shock to fans. 

Another historical moment was the nomination of Ann Roth for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’s” costume design. She’s 89-years-old and taking the title for oldest Oscar nominee, passing Christopher Plummer, who was 88.

The 93rd Academy Awards will go without a host for the third year in a row. The 2021 show will air on April 25 at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
