TikTok always leaves us asking, “what’s trending this week?” “What are the latest dance moves? And which styles are in?” Recently, numerous TikTok users have set out to create their own nostalgic Cartoon Network, Adult Swim bumpers.
As this trend is growing in popularity, many are are confused as to what exactly the [as] trend is. Fear not! We’re here to give you a crash course on what you should know about this TikTok trend.
What is Adult Swim?
Adult Swim is a cable network and nighttime programming block featured on Cartoon Network.
The shows are widely known for their vulgar language, nudity and sexual innuendos that play after Cartoon Network’s younger audience would be asleep.
Adult Swim is catered to adults, hence the name. The program would run from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., featuring shows like “Family Guy,” “Rick and Morty,” “American Dad, ” and “Bob’s Burgers.”
Their witty motto, “Find your favorite show, chat over the Live Stream, get event info, or just stare blankly. Your call,” correlates with the outlandish comedy shows and bumpers that grew into popularity.
Atlanta TV executive Mike Lazzo introduced the world to Adult Swim nearly 20 years ago in 2001. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “It’s sardonic, often absurd ‘bumps’ or video breaks between shows were as celebrated as the shows themselves.”
What is the TikTok Trend?
The TikTok trend, which praises and acknowledges the creative bumpers during commercial breaks, has many users talking about nostalgia.
Bumpers are in place to signal viewers that the show or featured program is going to start.
Adult Swim had a “field day” with their bumpers, creating random, funky scenarios with [adult swim] or [as] embedded somewhere in the video.
Today, the trend hits home for many millennials who remember the Adult Swim attributions and now, users are creating their own arbitrary versions paying tribute to the bumpers they once knew.
Adult Swim Responds
As the trend circulated worldwide, the Vano 300 sound associated with the TikTok challenge accumulated over 450,000 videos.
Soon these “new” Adult Swim curated videos appeared on millions of viewers “For You Page.”
Luckily, Adult Swim, itself, took part in the challenge and made a statement via TikTok. Their video obtained over 25 million views.
“We’ve been talking to you like this for a long time. It’s nice to see you talking back to us. Let’s keep it going,” they said.
Additionally, Adult Swim posted four of their favorite tribute bumpers via Instagram, captioned, “Real recognize real.”
