Ways to Take Care of Yourself During Exam Season! | Scoop Sorority

As exam season approaches, it’s important to make sure that you are prioritizing your mental health, and taking care of yourself. Oftentimes we get caught up in our studies, and stress ourselves out to the point that we forget to protect our own wellbeing.

As an anxious college student myself, I wanted to share some of the tips and tricks that I do to help myself stay happy and healthy during exam season. Check out these simple ways to prioritize yourself while you study!

Journaling

I like to keep a journal that I write in every day. When I am feeling overwhelmed or anxious, I grab the journal and write about my feelings, things that make me happy, or things that I am grateful for. Writing about my anxious feelings helps to get them out of my mind, and onto the journal instead. Writing about things that make me happy and things that I am grateful for help remind me of all the incredible things in my life, and that I should not be stressing over the little things.

Getting Outside 

Although this sounds like a simple task, when we are caught up in our studies we tend to stay isolated in our room studying. Taking at least 5 minutes, preferably more, and going outside is vital! Whether this is just sitting outside or  going on a walk or run, having time outside is very important. A change of scenery will help you to feel better, and even study better.

Exercise 

If you’re like me, when exam season comes around, you completely forget to exercise, even though exercise can help reduce stress and anxiety. Taking 30 minutes out of your day to do a quick exercise can help you to recenter yourself and release some stress. Whether this is an intense workout, or a short walk, exercise is exercise. Getting a good little sweat in will do wonders for your mental health, and will even give you a boost of energy to keep studying.

Coloring

Coloring has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety! Although it may seem childish, there are many adult coloring books out there for you to choose. Coloring helps you to take a mental break from the stress of school, and focus on yourself for a little bit. Try to color at least once a day and you will see big results! 

Studying Outside of Your Bed

With online classes, it is easy to stay in your bed all day. I really recommend saving your bed for sleeping and relaxing only. It is important to create some sort of other space for your classes, whether that is a desk or a dining room table. When we study from our bed, it can be extremely hard to focus because we associate our bed with sleeping. This will also help us to ensure that we have a change of environment, which will keep our minds fresh!

Get Ready For The Day!

Just like getting out of bed is important, so is getting ready for the day. Changing out of your PJs will allow you to feel better about yourself, and feel prepared for the day. People often say “dress for success” and this is true! Dressing up can help you have a big mood boost and prepare you for a great day!
