What to Know About New York Fashion Week 2021

New York Fashion Week is here, but with some adjustments. Designers are presenting their innovative and highly anticipated fall-winter 2021 collections. The collections provide an exciting and refreshing lens of fashion in their contemporary designs.

A Virtual NYFW

New collections show off designers creativity and inventive designs. The fashion world never fails to adapt to barriers in their way, including a pandemic. Due to New York remaining partially locked-down, NYFW collections are going to presented virtually. While we may not be watching from the streets, we will be watching from our screens.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America chairman, Tom Ford, announced that NYFW will be renamed as “American Collections Calendar.” Ford will also be giving a keynote speech at Harlem’s Fashion Row Fashion Summit.

Jason Wu will kick off this seasons live-stream, followed by presentations and discussion from Markarian (designer behind Dr. Jill Biden’s inauguration outfit) and the Imitation of Christ showcase.

Hello Fashion Month

There will be a couple days to present menswear collections and will be followed by the highly popular women’s collections. Due to NYFW being a livestreamed event, fashion week turns into fashion month. New shows and collections will be presented online everyday through the end of February and early April.

Michael Kors featured stunning long-line dressed and oversized tops. His outstanding colors of beige, blue, whites and browns were simply amazing.

Vivienne Westwood never fails to steal the show. Her collection gave off the best ’90s vibes with bright pops of color and originality.

Tom Ford did not hold back with his collection. With bright, vibrant pops of color, his collection featured beautiful long line dresses and monochromatic pieces.

Making History

Collina Strada came in with beautiful bright florals and mixed patterns. Her eccentric and funky collection showcased unique and abstract pieces such as patchwork, painted jeans, and plaid sneakers.

The designer made history with her model, Aaron Philip, a Black trans model with cerebral palsy. This was Philips first season in New York and she intends to make the fashion industry more “diverse, inclusive and accessible.’

Proanza Schouler is also making fashion history this season. Shortly after the inaugural ceremony, Ella Emhoff, Vice President Kamala Harris’ step-daughter, was signed to the American fashion label.  She made her runway debut this week while sporting three different looks around the New York Parrish Art Museum.

While this year’s fashion week may have some differences, the amazing collections made up for it. NYFW is a great way to discover and be exposed to up-and-coming designers and trends.
