Zayn Malik Calls Out the Grammys on Twitter

Another year, another Grammys season with drama. Singer Zayn Malik spoke out against the Grammys on Twitter, calling them out for being problematic.

The singer addressed the awards in two tweets that went viral. Malik’s words shocked fans, as the R&B crooner is usually absent on social media.

Called Out

Malik accused The Grammys of being rigged and having a “lack of transparency.”

“F–k the grammys and everyone associated. Unless you shake hands and send gifts, there’s not nomination considerations. Next year I’ll send you a basket of confectionary,” Malik tweeted

His tweet attracted a lot of attention and conversation online, including a like from singer and former collaborator, Kehlani. His most recent album, “Nobody Is Listening” was released in January 2021, making it not eligible for a nomination in the 63rd Grammys.

Making Things Clear

Because his album was not eligible for this year’s Grammys, many were confused as to where his tweet came from. Others speculated if this was a dig or shade at any of the nominees.

He later made another statement on Twitter, further addressing what he meant in his first tweet. The “Dusk Till Dawn” singer further exposed the award show for “favoritism” and “racism.”

“My tweet was not personal or about eligibility but was about the need for inclusion and the lack of transparency of the nomination process and the space that creates and allows favoritism, racism, and networking politics to influence the voting process,” he tweeted

Previously Snubbed

Like many artists, Malik has been previously snubbed by the Grammys.

The 28-year-old’s music backs up his claims. His 2016 solo single “Pillowtalk,” from his debut album, made history. He became the first UK male solo artist to debut at No. 1 in the UK and US.

“Pillowtalk was the biggest & most streamed debut in 2016, Mind Of Mine was one of the biggest records in 2016, I Don’t Wanna Live Forever was the most streamed song in 2017, Dusk Till Dawn was #1 on charts for weeks in 2018. Yet ZERO nominations for Zayn. Rigged system,” one fan tweeted in support of Malik and his accomplishments.

Many fans online compared Malik to The Weeknd and their nomination snubs. The Weeknd also called out The Grammys via Twitter for their lack of transparency. It seems like Zayn and The Weeknd have more in common than we thought.

Other than working on his music and calling out The Grammys online, the extremely private star has been enjoying fatherhood at home with Gigi Hadid and their daughter, Khai
